Activity Summary

The Indonesian oil and gas industry is currently experiencing a situation of decline in its role in supporting the national economy. Oil production continues to decline steadily, while oil demand continues to increase along with development, so that Indonesia is increasingly becoming an oil importing country.

Oil production is related to oil reserves which continue to decline. So far, the addition of reserves has relied on exploration results to discover new reserves.

So far the mindset has been that reserves can only be increased through exploration (extension). An alternative idea is through intensification, namely increasing the recovery factor through enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology.

This study shows the results of an analysis of EOR activities that have been and are currently being carried out in the Meruap field using SeMar chemicals produced domestically. This study also evaluates the prospects for future application of EOR to the national economy.



Target

This research intends to evaluate the application of EOR technology as an alternative to increasing oil production in Indonesia. The case taken is the use of SeMar chemicals which have been tried in the Meruap Field and gave positive results. Research objectives include: Evaluate the results of using SeMar chemicals on Meruap field production, and Estimating the prospects for applying EOR technology to increase national oil production.

The Meruap Field is located in Jambi Province. Sarolangun Regency/District. The existence of oil was discovered by Huffco in 1974, and currently Meruap is managed by KSO-Pertamina EP – Samudera Energi BWP Meruap. The Meruap field is included in the old oil field category because it has passed its peak production and the production wells have a fairly high water cut. The production of the Meruap Field can be increased by providing special treatment to the nature of the bond between the oil system, formation water and rock pores in the reservoir rock system. This special treatment changes the physical properties of the bond between rock pores and oil in the formation water environment, by providing chemicals into the reservoir rock system.
