Activity Summary

In the context of environmental sustainability, including the built environment, the presence of natural light from the sun is of great benefit not only as an alternative source of renewable energy, but also as part of efforts to save energy consumption in buildings and improve the performance of building users. One of the buildings that has a massive number of typologies and typical shapes throughout Indonesia is the state elementary school (SD). In Indonesia, investigations into natural lighting in elementary school buildings are still very limited. From several studies conducted in various places in Indonesia, it was concluded that the criteria for good natural lighting have not been met in the majority of classrooms in elementary school buildings in Indonesia. Based on the results of a sample survey at SD Negeri 1 and SD Negeri 4 in Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City, Aceh, it was found that the low quality of lighting, especially natural lighting in these classrooms occurred partly due to the lack of openings or windows in the walls, as well as the presence of barriers both on the inside (for example curtains) and outside (buildings outside). As a result, for most of the day there is insufficient natural lighting in the classroom, so electric lighting (lamps) must always be used. However, the quality of electrical lighting in indoor spaces is often still inadequate, due to a lack of light output, or lamp specifications that are not yet up to date, for example still using conventional (non-LED) lamp types. For this reason, it is necessary to carry out detailed assessments or evaluations of the lighting conditions of the classrooms in the two state elementary schools, followed by implementing improvements to the lighting conditions of the relevant classrooms.

Based on this background, this Community Service activity aims to determine existing conditions and improve lighting conditions in classrooms in a number of public elementary school buildings in Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City, Aceh Province.

Targeted output of these Community Service activities are:

1.  Carrying out assessment activities and improving lighting conditions at two state elementary schools, namely SD Negeri 1 Banda Sakti and SD Negeri 4 Banda Sakti, Lancang Garam Village, Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City.

2.  Appropriate products in the form of LED-based lights have been installed in classrooms at the two state elementary schools.

To achieve this goal, the following things have been implemented:

Evaluate existing conditions:

·   Detailed survey of classrooms, especially regarding room geometry, openings/windows, indoor surface reflectance, glass transmittance, light spot plans, as well as specifications of the lights used.

·   Measurement of outdoor horizontal illuminance in an open field, at specified time samples (e.g. 09.00, 12.00, 15.00 WIB).

·   Horizontal illuminance measurements on student desks and teacher desks, as well as vertical illuminance measurements at observer positions (students and teachers), in each classroom, at specified sample times (e.g. 09.00, 12.00, 15.00 WIB).

Design implementation:

·   Repainting surfaces in classrooms.

·   Optimal installation/installation of devices and lights in classrooms.

·   Providing information/counseling as well as disseminating the results of activities to teachers and students, especially regarding maintenance of installed lighting systems.

In its implementation, this activity was carried out in collaboration with the Architecture Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Malikussaleh University, Lhokseumawe. A visit to the location was carried out on 3 s.d. September 6 2024. Publication of activities has been published in the form of news in three online media, as well as one community service journal.

Target

Knowing the existing conditions and improving lighting conditions in classrooms in a number of public elementary school buildings in Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City, Aceh Province

Testimonials

This activity is useful in terms of improving the quality of lighting in elementary school classrooms in Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City, Aceh; the impact of which is directly felt by the teachers and students in the elementary schools in question. Apart from that, in this activity a workshop was also held for the teachers at the elementary school concerned, as well as a workshop on writing scientific papers for the lecturers of the Architecture Study Program, Faculty of Engineering, Malikussaleh University, so that it was also useful in developing the knowledge of the teachers and lecturers.
