Activity Summary

Maileppet is one of the villages on Siberut Island which is administratively included in Siberut Selatan District, Mentawai Islands Regency. The relatively close location causes this village to become a support area for natural ecosystems in Siberut Island National Park. The efforts of the preservation of high and unique biodiversity in the Mentawai Islands are very relating to the level of awareness and understanding of the people living in the area around the in-situ conservation area. However, the knowledge related to the sustainability of biodiversity is not maximal, especially for school students who are the spearhead of conservation efforts in the future. Therefore, community service activities are intended to increase awareness and knowledge in preserving the environment and biodiversity in it. This activity was held on October 12-15 2021 at SMAN 1 southern Siberut through collaboration between Sith-ITB and the Department of Biology, Andalas University. The series of activities began with the opening of Dr. Wilson Novarino, who was then continued by Dr. Djong Hon Tjong regarding the diversity of Herpetofauna. After that, Dr. Nurainas held a workshop for making souvenirs from natural ingredients. In the final session, Aditya D. Pramudya introduced bird-type truits through photography. During the activity, students were given an introduction to the basic photography method and a glimpse of the diversity of species of birds that could be found in the village of Maileppet. The introduction level of students related to the diversity of birds around the village of Maileppet is still quite minimal. It is seen from the low number of students who know some types of birds shown during exposure. However, understanding related to the importance of conservation efforts to the sustainability of birds and other animals is good enough. Through this activity, students are expected to bring up perceptions and desire to get to know, understand, and then maintain the diversity of birds and other animals in the Mentawai Islands. Guidance activities through more technical activities are still needed, such as the initiation of animal observer groups at the high school level, as well as other types of activities.

Initiating perceptions of students as the spearhead of conservation efforts and pounding concerns and desires in preserving biodiversity in the village of Maileppet. It aims to prepare the class generation to be able to know more, understand, and protect existing biodiversity. In addition, the introduction through photography can be a new knowledge for students and is expected to trigger more curiosity related to animals and plants around it.
