This activity highlights the importance of a pentahelix-based collaborative approach—involving the government, community, universities, private sector, and media—in preserving peatlands in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan. With a focus on community empowerment programs, this research shows how initiatives such as Desa Mandiri Peduli Gambut (DMPG) and the use of web-based technology such as www.dmpg.org can support peatland rehabilitation. This study identifies the ecological, social, and economic benefits of this approach, as well as the challenges faced. This article underlines the need for cross-sector synergy to preserve the critical peat ecosystem in Indonesia.
This program aims to increase community capacity in managing peat ecosystems sustainably through training, counseling and peatland-based economic development.
One effort to increase the effectiveness of peat management is to develop a web-based application, www.dmpg.org. This application is designed to facilitate the collection, storage and analysis of data related to peatland conditions. Through this application, the public can report the current conditions of peatlands, such as humidity levels, fire threats or illegal activities. The data collected will be analyzed to provide evidence-based management recommendations. Apart from that, this application is also an educational platform that provides information about the importance of protecting peat ecosystems and practical ways that the community can take part.
